Silly nanday

My nanday is so silly. I opened the drawer that I have my socks and underwear in, and he had to fly over and in the drawer to play with my socks. He is such a nut. What his fasination with socks are, I will never understand. There just seems to be certin things he loves to mess with. When I go in my closet to get a top, he loves to fly in there, and mess with the emty hangers, knocking them to the floor, so I have to pick them up. He also loves to go from hanger to hanger and play with the tops. Just like a kid.
Makes you wonder what they are thinking in their little brains, when they like to go mess with things like that. I guess they find it fun. Here are the photos I took of him playing in my sock drawer.

My birds

Since 1976, I have had birds in my life, except for a few short periods of time. My very first bird was a budgie, known as a parakeet only in the united states. I had bought my first budgie when Woolworth's use to be around, and had a bird department. Growing up, my dad always moved into places that didn't allow pets of any kind. He grew up with dogs, so don't know what he had against  having a pet.
I had budgies for a great deal of my teens into my 30's. My only other pets in there was a few rabbits. My first exsperience with a bigger bird, was with a nanday back in 1997, named Romeo, then a nanday named Chico. My next exsperience was with a cockatiel named Dusty, that I got from a breeder in 1998.
I preferr the conure species of birds, as they seem to stay tame, once they are tamed, and seem to never forget the people they are attached to. Cockatiels seem to distance themselfs if there comes a time when you can't spend much time with them. I still have Dusty and Chico.

For anyone wanting to get a first bird, go to a reliable bird place, and try to pick out a bird that wants to go home with you. That bird will more likely be friends with you the rest of their lifes. feed them well. Don't keep them on an all seed diet, as this will shorten their lives.

Wheeking

It's amazing how guinea pigs will make a wheeking noise when they hear a bag rattle, when they are out of food or water, or just want your attention or a treat. Never knew the critters could be so loud at it as well. I have an extra room, just for my pets. I often have that door closed, so not to disturb them when I am up late and watching t.v. It's funny how you can still hear their wheeking thru the doors. My guinea pig Hershey loves to stick his nose out of his door, every time he sees you coming, hoping that you have a treat or 2 for him. He will often grap a piece of carrot out of my hand, and go run in the corner of his cage with it, to savor every bit. He acts like now that he got his prize, he wants to go and enjoy it.
Sweet Pea and her sister Gizmo, like to stick their noises up in the air, like they are stuck up, sniffing the air, to smell what you brought. Squeekers sticks her nose up in the air as well, waiting for her lettuce, or whatever you bring her, while Tigar Lilly chews on the side of her cage. I normally wait to give the sisters their treats for last, as it's fun to see them run around the cage and wheek, wondering where their treat may be. They will take turns sticking their noses out at you, and wheek.
When my guinea pigs are gone, I know I will miss them dearly. They become a part of your lives as much as a cat or dog, or any other pet a person may have. They are like having a small rabbit around the house with tiny ears, and no tail. They pretty much eat the same as a rabbit does, and are more closly related to them then they are to rodents. Many people think they are of the rodent family, but they are in a class of their own, called cavies. I love all animals, some more then others.

My Guinea Pigs

I have had  guinea pigs since March of 2007. My first ones were 2 sister that were born in March. One is all black, and the other one being brown and white, which I fell in love with at first sight. The breeder had lived in the same building as me me at the time, and had talked me into taking the brown and white guinea pigs sister, so she would have company while I was at work.
Being that these were my first ever guinea pigs, I didn't know quite what to exspect, and had thought something was wrong with the brown and white guinea pig, finding out that nothing was wrong with her except that she was happy, and was doing something called popcorning. The way she started out though, I really thought she had an ear infection.
My neighbor knows alot about guinea pigs, since he has been breeding them for a long time, so he had come down to check her, and had asked me to discribe again what was happening. He had said that she was happy, and had exsplained that what she was doing was popcorning.
I don't regret getting the guinea pigs now, as they are like taking care of a rabbit in some ways, except you give them guinea pig food instead of rabbit food. But the other food is just about the same, like timothy hay, carrots, romaine lettuce or better, and a few treats once in awhile like broccoli, cauliflower, celery, and stuff like that.
I never thought a guinea pig would make such a great pet, even for grown ups. They love to be held and petted, and can be litter trained to use a litter pan. I put the same litter in the pan as I use in their cage, which works well. Unlike other pets, guinea pigs do require a high vitiman C diet.
